Eligibility requirements
- Work in a recognised eligible field and qualify as a leader or potential leader under the appropriate endorsement criteria, or personally hold a prize on the official prestigious-prizes list.
- For research, the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy and UKRI cover relevant disciplines and routes. Eligible appointments, fellowships, endorsed funding or peer review require different evidence.
- For digital technology, Tech Nation assesses qualifying technical or business expertise and an evidenced record of talent or promise. Ordinary experience using technology is not by itself evidence of leadership in the sector.
- Arts and culture applications go through Arts Council England and relevant specialist assessment arrangements. Select the correct discipline and evidence standard, including any applicable design pathway.
- Meet identity and suitability requirements and any conditions on switching from an existing UK status. Submit the first visa application within the permitted period after endorsement, normally three months.
Legal framework
Immigration Rules: Appendix Global Talent ↗
Contains validity, suitability, endorsement, permission and settlement requirements. It differentiates exceptional talent from exceptional promise and provides specific evidential tests.
Global Talent caseworker guidance ↗
Explains endorsing bodies, application handling, extensions and the three- or five-year settlement periods.
Build the evidence
Prepare records that substantiate the relevant criteria. The final checklist depends on the applicant, route and filing authority.
- A field-specific CV and evidence map separating each required criterion from the documents that establish it.
- Independent proof of achievements and impact: research, awards, recognised artistic work, product innovation or commercial contribution as relevant to the actual pathway.
- Required recommendation letters. Digital-technology applicants need three appropriate expert recommendations and supporting evidence in the prescribed format; research appointments need the specified institutional records.
- Passport and endorsement or qualifying prize evidence, any required tuberculosis certificate, and family relationship documentation. Review translated documents and consistency across prior applications.
How to apply
- 01
Choose the field and pathway
Determine whether endorsement, a research fast track or the prestigious-prize route genuinely fits. Compare talent and promise against the evidence rather than choosing by preference.
- 02
Prepare the endorsement record
Use the relevant GOV.UK and endorsing-body requirements. Build a concise, independently verifiable account of achievement with no duplicate or inflated claims.
- 03
Apply for immigration permission
Apply online for the visa, pay the relevant charges and complete identity or biometric steps. Endorsement and visa applications may sometimes run together, but endorsement alone does not extend UK permission.
- 04
Coordinate family and entry
Eligible dependants apply separately and pay their own charges. Check permitted switching, travel and entry arrangements, then verify the granted digital status.
- 05
Build the extension and settlement record
Track earnings connected to the endorsed or prize-related field, absences and endorsement status. Review the individual's settlement clock and dependants' separate requirements before making long-term plans.
After approval & family planning
- The holder can generally work as an employee, be self-employed or direct a company and change employment without employer sponsorship. Professional sport and access to most public funds are restricted.
- Extension requires the applicable evidence, including qualifying UK earnings and continuing endorsement or prize status. It is not granted merely because the original visa existed.
- Current rules provide a three-year settlement period for research-body endorsements, eligible prize holders and ACE/Tech Nation exceptional talent; ACE/Tech Nation exceptional promise normally requires five years. Continuous residence, earnings, English and Life in the UK requirements also apply.
- Eligible partners and children may apply as dependants. A partner normally has a separate five-year settlement period; the main applicant's shorter route does not automatically accelerate it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a job offer or fixed salary?
There is no general sponsoring-employer or minimum-salary requirement. An eligible academic-appointment endorsement pathway does, however, rely on a specific qualifying appointment.
Can I work for more than one client?
The route permits self-employment and is not tied to one sponsoring employer. Contracts, regulated professions, tax and the holder's actual visa conditions still need separate attention.
Is English required?
There is no initial Global Talent language test requirement. Settlement has an English requirement: current rules specify B1 speaking/listening before 26 March 2027 and B2 for applications on or after that date, unless exempt.
Can a successful entrepreneur qualify automatically?
No. The achievements must meet the criteria of an eligible field. A profitable business outside the recognised fields does not become a Global Talent case solely because it is successful.
Points to consider
- Use the operative Immigration Rules, not a consultation proposal, to calculate settlement eligibility.
- An endorsement application or review is not permission to remain or work; protect the applicant's current immigration position separately.
