What mobility capital is
Mobility capital is the stock of knowledge, cognitive capability and institutional opportunity that a person accumulates through structured, real work across jurisdictions, and that can be converted into economic, cultural and social returns for the person and for the organisations to which they belong.
The idea extends Pierre Bourdieu's account of capital, which distinguished economic, cultural and social forms and showed how each converts into the others. In a world where the ability to work legitimately in more than one country has become scarce and valuable, mobility deserves to be treated as a form of capital in its own right. It is not a by-product of a visa. It is built, slowly, through doing real work in a place where the rules, the language and the expectations are different from the ones a person grew up with.
Three distinctions follow. Mobility capital is not study abroad, which builds cultural exposure without work responsibility. It is not a short assignment or business travel, which lack duration. And it is not investment-based residence, which acquires the opportunity component without the knowledge and cognition components. Each of those has its place; none of them builds what a year of genuine responsibility in a foreign office builds.
The three components
| Component | What it is | How it is built | How it is observed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | Domain and technical knowledge acquired on the job, together with the enterprise-specific and jurisdiction-specific knowledge that only comes from working inside a system | Substantive roles with supervision, deliverables and review; structured training capped so that work, not class time, dominates | Capability assessments, adoption of deliverables, promotion reviews, professional credentials |
| Cognition | Cognitive flexibility, integrative complexity and cultural intelligence: the ability to hold more than one frame at once and to act well inside a foreign one | Sustained multicultural working over months and years; responsibility for outcomes in the foreign setting, not observation of it | Validated instruments (cultural intelligence scales, integrative-complexity coding), supervisor assessment, the quality of judgement in novel situations |
| Opportunity | Institutional optionality: the set of jurisdictions in which the person and their family can legitimately work, invest and live, and the organisational structures that make it durable | Lawful status earned through genuine activity; roles and affiliations that qualify for onward routes; family structures aligned with the plan | Statuses held and their conditions, routes opened and closed, entities established, the realistic time to permanence |
The components reinforce one another. Knowledge earned in a foreign role is what makes the person eligible for the next status; the cognitive capability built by that role is what makes them effective when they arrive; and the opportunity that results is what allows the next cycle of knowledge to begin. Capital accumulates when the three move together, and stalls when any one is pursued alone. Knowledge, cognition and opportunity each have their own page.
Why real work is the mechanism
Every immigration authority in the nine destinations we cover tests substance. The United States asks whether the employer relationship is genuine and the role is what the petition says it is. Canada asks whether the business is "doing business" and the specialised knowledge is real. Japan asks whether the activity matches the status of residence. Singapore asks whether the job and the salary are what the employer declared. The United Kingdom asks whether the sponsor is a genuine employer with a genuine vacancy. The questions differ in wording and in the evidence they prefer; they are the same question.
The same substance is what builds the capital. A person who holds a real role, reports to a real manager, delivers real work and is reviewed on it accumulates knowledge and cognitive capability as a matter of course. A person who holds a nominal position accumulates neither, and in most jurisdictions holds a status that will not survive its first renewal. Compliance and capability turn out to be the same thing seen from two sides. That is why WG begins every assessment with the activity, not the visa category: the real-work principle.
What this means for how WG works
- We start with the activity. What will the person actually do, for whom, under whose direction, with what deliverables? The route follows from the answer, never the other way round.
- We assess three returns, not one. A route that confers status but builds no knowledge is a weak route. A route that builds knowledge but closes the next door is an incomplete one. Every programme guide on this site carries a mobility capital analysis for that reason.
- We plan in stations. Capital compounds. A first station chosen for what it builds makes the second station possible; a second station chosen for what it opens makes permanence realistic. See first and second stations.
- We plan for the family and the enterprise. Dependants' rights to work and study, the schooling of children, the continuity of a family business and the tax residence of the household are part of the assessment from the start. See families and enterprises.
- We document as we go. The evidence that satisfies an authority at renewal is the same evidence that demonstrates capital was built. WG's engagement model produces it monthly rather than reconstructing it at filing time.
Where the framework comes from
The framework is the subject of a doctoral research programme led by the founder of WG Global's parent group, Magellan Global, and conducted with the Magellan Technology Research Institute. It draws on the multicultural-experience literature in psychology, on absorptive-capacity theory in management, on real-options reasoning in finance and on the sociology of capital. It is tested on a longitudinal panel of participants in Magellan's successor-development programme and a matched comparison group. The research is governed by an ethics protocol; participation is voluntary and never affects any employment or mobility decision; research data are never used to market to individual clients. Details are on the research programme page.
WG Global's services do not depend on the research. The framework is useful because it describes what the authorities already test and what clients already want: the route that builds the most and closes the least.
General information, not an individual eligibility decision or legal, tax or investment advice. The competent authority determines the outcome. WG’s engagement and any regulated professional work are scoped separately.
