Who can qualify

Eligibility requirements

  • For academic research or specialised/technical activities: hold a master’s degree or higher and receive at least JPY20 million annually; alternatively, have at least ten years of relevant practical experience and that remuneration.
  • For advanced business management: have at least five years of relevant management/administration experience and receive at least JPY40 million annually.
  • The proposed Japanese role must fall within the qualifying activity category. A high balance in a bank account or investment portfolio is not equivalent to the required salary.
  • The salary commitment, employing organisation and experience must be demonstrable and consistent. General admission criteria and the applicable underlying activity conditions also apply.

Build the evidence

Prepare records that substantiate the relevant criteria. The final checklist depends on the applicant, route and filing authority.

  • Degree award and subject information for the education-based route, or detailed employment certificates establishing the required practical experience.
  • A Japanese employment/appointment or assignment agreement documenting annual remuneration, position, duties and the organisational relationship.
  • Host-company registration, business/activity records and a clear explanation of the role’s technical, academic or managerial substance.
  • Passport and civil documents, plus family relationship and support evidence if accompanying family permissions are requested.

How to apply

  1. 01

    Choose the special criteria

Map the applicant to research/technical or management activities. Compare the J-Skip tests with standard HSP points so that the chosen route fits the actual career evidence.

  2. 02

    Audit remuneration and career chronology

Reconcile the proposed annual package and employment terms with supporting records. Resolve gaps in management or technical experience before filing.

  3. 03

Apply for HSP recognition and a COE

The Japanese submission presents the special-criteria evidence with the relevant HSP application. An in-country applicant should use the appropriate change-of-status procedure.

  4. 04

Complete the visa and arrival formalities

Use the COE for the consular visa application and complete immigration, address and residence-card formalities on arrival. Plan renewals and any later permanent-residence application separately.

After approval & family planning

  • J-Skip carries additional preferential treatment, including wider spouse-work and domestic-worker concessions under specified conditions; these are not unrestricted rights for every relative.
  • A qualifying special highly skilled professional may use the shortened one-year residence route to permanent residence, subject to the complete permanent-residence criteria.
  • Monitor continued activities, remuneration, tax and social-insurance compliance; a prospective permanent-residence application requires its own current evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is J-Skip the same as a “J visa”?

No. Japan uses specific residence categories. J-Skip is the special highly skilled framework; J-Find is a different designated-activities route.

Can business ownership replace the JPY40 million remuneration test?

No. Owning a company is not the same as documenting qualifying annual remuneration and five years of management experience.

Can a senior engineer qualify without a master’s degree?

Potentially through the alternative ten-year relevant-experience test, with the required JPY20 million remuneration and qualifying Japanese activity.

Does J-Skip provide immediate permanent residence?

No. It grants highly skilled residence status. The shortened residence period is a potential eligibility rule for a later application, not automatic approval.

Points to consider

  • The high remuneration thresholds are role-specific; combining unrelated asset returns is not a substitute.
  • Business-management applicants need a review of the current underlying management rules, including the 2025 reforms where applicable.
