Eligibility requirements
- Be aged 18 or older and hold a qualifying bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral-level qualification from an eligible university.
- The institution must satisfy the official university-list rules, based on being in the top 100 of at least two of the three designated global rankings. Check the current official list rather than a single ranking announcement.
- The qualifying award must fall within the preceding five years. A distant graduation date is not cured simply by having a long professional career.
- Show the required personal savings and a realistic plan for job searching or entrepreneurial preparation in Japan. The minimum savings figure should not be mistaken for a complete two-year living budget.
Legal framework
Designated Activities — Future Creation Individual ↗
The Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act’s Designated Activities framework and the relevant ministerial designation govern the permitted job-search, entrepreneurial preparation and associated activities.
MOFA J-Find entry rules ↗
Sets out the applicant’s age, qualification, recency, savings and consular documentation requirements.
Build the evidence
Prepare records that substantiate the relevant criteria. The final checklist depends on the applicant, route and filing authority.
- Passport, photograph and the prescribed visa or COE application documents.
- Degree and graduation-date evidence, together with a check of the institution against the current eligibility list.
- Personal bank evidence and a practical budget covering accommodation, insurance, travel and the intended search/preparation period.
- Curriculum vitae, description of intended activities and the required health-insurance undertaking; marriage/birth records for family applications.
How to apply
- 01
Confirm the university and award
WG checks the exact awarding institution, qualification level and date against the published rules before arranging any relocation plan.
- 02
Prepare an activities plan
Describe target employment sectors or the business concept, intended research and preparation, timing and financial support. Distinguish preparation from operating a business under a different work status.
- 03
Select the consular application route
MOFA permits presentation of a COE or the specified supporting dossier. Follow the responsible Japanese mission’s local submission instructions; a proxy in Japan may assist with a COE where appropriate.
- 04
Manage extensions and the next status
Track the granted period and apply for any extension before expiry. When a job or operating business is ready, assess the appropriate employment, HSP or Business Manager status rather than assuming J-Find converts automatically.
After approval & family planning
- The initial permission may be one year, six months or another designated term within the applicable limit. The aggregate two-year ceiling requires any necessary extension.
- A dependent spouse or child can apply under the associated designated-activities category. Their permitted work must be checked against the actual permission.
- Complete health-insurance and residence procedures and retain evidence of genuine job-search or business-preparation activities.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a job offer before applying?
This route is designed for qualifying job searching and entrepreneurial preparation; an existing offer is not its central eligibility test.
Is J-Find available to every graduate of a top-100 university?
No. The official list uses its own ranking methodology, and the award level and five-year recency test also apply.
Does JPY200,000 buy two years of residence?
No. It is an initial support-funds criterion. Admission, the activities plan, the period granted and later extensions are separately assessed.
Can I establish a permanent operating business on J-Find alone?
Business preparation is distinct from an enduring management permission. Assess the Business Manager or other appropriate status before the activity changes.
Points to consider
- Use the name J-Find and the exact designated activity, not an undefined “J visa”.
- An eligible university or successful job search does not itself confer permanent residence.
