Exceptional achievement. An invitation to contribute.

The National Innovation visa is a permanent visa for exceptional and outstanding achievers. An Expression of Interest is an invitation-stage submission, not a visa application or a residence permission.

Australia National Innovation Visa

An invitation-only permanent visa for people with internationally recognised exceptional achievement. Researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, professionals, athletes and creatives may be considered when their record and prospective contribution meet the demanding standard. Buying an investment or holding a senior job does not itself establish eligibility.

Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482): employer-sponsored temporary work

The Skills in Demand visa is the route by which an approved Australian business sponsor fills a skilled position with an overseas worker for up to four years. Eligibility turns on the stream, the nominated occupation, the salary offered against an indexed income threshold, and a year of relevant work experience. A visa holder who leaves the sponsor now has up to 180 days to find a new one, which materially changes how the route is used in practice.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186): permanent residence through the employer

Subclass 186 converts an employer relationship into permanent residence. The Temporary Residence Transition stream rewards two years of full-time work with the same sponsor on a subclass 482 or 457 visa; the Direct Entry stream serves applicants with three years of experience and a skills assessment whose occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List. Either way the employer nominates, the applicant is assessed against age, English and salary rules, and the visa, if granted, is permanent from day one.

Skilled Independent (189) and Skilled Nominated (190): points-tested permanent residence

The points-tested visas grant permanent residence without an employer. An applicant lodges an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect, is scored on age, English, experience, qualifications and other factors, and waits for an invitation. The subclass 189 needs no nominator but is now reserved in practice for a small number of priority occupations; the subclass 190 adds a state or territory nomination worth five points and carries most of the programme. Both require an occupation on the specified list, a skills assessment and at least 65 points.
