Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482): employer-sponsored temporary work

The Skills in Demand visa is the route by which an approved Australian business sponsor fills a skilled position with an overseas worker for up to four years. Eligibility turns on the stream, the nominated occupation, the salary offered against an indexed income threshold, and a year of relevant work experience. A visa holder who leaves the sponsor now has up to 180 days to find a new one, which materially changes how the route is used in practice.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186): permanent residence through the employer

Subclass 186 converts an employer relationship into permanent residence. The Temporary Residence Transition stream rewards two years of full-time work with the same sponsor on a subclass 482 or 457 visa; the Direct Entry stream serves applicants with three years of experience and a skills assessment whose occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List. Either way the employer nominates, the applicant is assessed against age, English and salary rules, and the visa, if granted, is permanent from day one.
